Default 486 SX config wrong won't start up need password

I have had this computer since 1993. It has worked excellent and I have never
upgraded it or anything. However, I moved and when we went to set it up again,
I have a message saying that I need a password because a valid script file is
missing. (We were using the restore cd to format the hard drive) Now I can't
get the computer to do anything and when it boots regularly without the disk
and cd, it says the configuration file is wrong, even if I set all of it to
default and exit and restart it still won't go into windows . So that is why we
were going to reformat it but like I said I can't get it to reformat or restore
or do anything without a password . Do you have any idea what the password is
supposed to be?
Thank you,

Does a password screen pop up before the computer boots Windows? If so, it may
well be a CMOS BIOS password.

If you have never replaced the battery which supplies juice to the motherboard
to keep the CMOS info OK when the computer is unplugged from the wall, replace
it. Leave the old battery out for an hour or so, then install the new battery.
The BIOS will indicate that its settings (not just the password) are corrupt,
and then you will have to "renew" them, the most important being the parameters
(heads, tracks, sectors) for the hard drive. The BIOS is old enough that it
probably will not "autotype" the hard drive like newer systems do.

If you are seeing another menu asking for a password, not the CMOS one, post
another message describing exactly what is going on... Ben Myers
