Default Compaq Pres. 7360- No operating system found-error

Everytime I try to boot up my elderly Dads pc, after the red Compaq letters,
he gets a "no operating system found" error. I've tried using the
quickrestore CD's, but all it does is pop up a screen that says
"quickrestore", and just blinks forever and goes no further. I build PC's,
so this is really ****ing me off. I tried changing the boot sequence so it
will boot from the floppy with a start up disk, but even that won't work.
I'd rather not pay Compaq just to tell me my hard drive is broken (you know
how they are). The pc is about 3 years old and has Win98SE.
Anyone have any answers?
Thanks!
Carol

Is it going thru the POST? Doesn't sound like it is. May be MMB not the HD.
Sorry!

Did you try checking the hard drive parameters in cmos?
I've seen computers lockup trying to initialize the HD and
not let me boot from floppy either.

If you or your dad made your own startup floppy (not Compaq's recovery
floppy but a real Win98 startup disk), boot up with the floppy and check and
see if the OS even recognizes the hard drive. If not, check your CMOS
settings and make sure the defaults are loaded. If you're confident using
FDISK check the partitioning to make sure there is a valid one. If
partitions aren't right Compaq's restore CDs sometimes won't work. However,
chances are you need to replace the hard drive.

It sounds to me that the hard drive is gone, but if you are really sure it's o,
try making sure it is configured as calble select (if it still has the original
data ribbon cables) instead of master/slave configuration. Some Western Digital
hard drives works as Single drive on Compaq computers.
