Default Quality 52x media?

OK, I didn't know. Mea culpa. :-( I was a user of crappy media.

I've been having all sorts of problems with my Lite-On 52x32x52x (Model
52327S) CD-RW drive. I was getting write error messages, "sensing" error
messages, and so on. Sometimes, a write operation would abort the burn or
even crash the system, but usually the drive would *try* to spin up but
couldn't determine from the media how fast it should go, so it would give up
or burn at some very low default speed (I assume 1x)... if I was lucky.

Someone suggested that I really need to use quality media, and that the
Memorex 52x media that I was using did not qualify as "quality media." I
didn't have anything but another cakebox of Memorex, but I broke the
shrinkwrap anyway and noticed that the discs looked physically different
than the ones I had been using (presumably because another rmanufacturer
made them for Memorex), so I tried them. The drive seems to be working
perfectly now. sigh

So... may I have some recommendations for good 52x CD-R media? Someone at
work suggested that Fujifilm is very good, but I would like to hear from you
folks. What's the general consensus for quality CD-R discs among those who
do lots of CD burning?

The first recommendation would be to slow down a little - since only a
small part of the disc (the outer edge) is actually written at 52X, you
won't see much change in burn speed if you limit your maximum to
something like 40X.

The second recommendation is to use Taiyo Yuden or the more expensive
Verbatim discs (not the cheapest Verbatims).

Cheers.

James.

Many thanks, James. I will follow your advice on both counts.

Taiyo Yuden media is good stuff, though the usual brand selling those discs
in the past, Fujifilm, is using Prodisc now, I believe, which are not as
good. Ritek's discs tend to be pretty good also, Maxell is probably the best
known brand that uses them, as well as lots of no-name brands (trick is
finding out which..)

If you using Win9x, you need to "DMA" all your drives such as HDs,
burner and CD-ROM drive.
