Cooling fan for Core 2 duo
I am planning a system built around a Core 2 Duo E8400 cpu. I have not
put a system together for a number of years. 1. Am I correct that a cooler is not furnished in the retail box (if I can find one of these for cpu's! they seem to be in short supply)? 2. Assuming not, does anyone have any recos for a good quality fan? I am not a gamer, just video editing, lots of DVD burning, and just standard low-demand business apps? 3. Should I use a good grease, like Artic Silver, for mounting any fan? Thanks in advance, Ken K |

The OEM version doesn't include the fan but the Retail Boxed version does. Tom Lake Thanks, Ken K |

Thanks in advance, Ken K The stock cooler that comes in the retail box will be fine unless you are planing to do some serious overclocking. You should be able to get a 10% overclock with Intel's cooler, if you are looking to push the processor up 30% then you would want to get a high performance cooler like a Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme. |

Cooling fan for Core 2 duo
The retail version of that CPU DOES include the cooling fan assembly and a
thermal pad. The included cooler is adequate if you don't overtax or overclock your CPU. -- --DaveW "Ken" wrote in message ... I am planning a system built around a Core 2 Duo E8400 cpu. The retail processor does come with a heatsink & cooling fan but I'm not at all pleased with it. It places stress on the system board where it is mounted. I replaced mine with an aftermarket fan with a board backing plate & the heatsink screws into the plate through the holes in the mainboard. The snap-in mounting system for Socket 775 is terrible, I agree - although it's hardly limited to Intel stock coolers, plenty of third party coolers use it. Even if using the stock cooler, it's worth a couple of bucks for a decent tube of thermal grease, as it's easy to damage the pad if you have to make a couple of tries getting the cooler to mount properly. For the stock cooler, I've always used the cheaper Artic compounds (Ceramique or Aluminum, rather than silver), but it doesn't hurt to use the better stuff other than a few extra dollars. -- Nate Edel http://www.cubiclehermit.com/ preferred email | is "nate" at the | "I do have a cause, though.
