ATi 9800 Pro - what's nVidia equivalent?
Hi - What's the nVidia equivalent of an ATi Radeon 9800 Pro? And, what's
the nVidia equivalent of an ATi Radeon 9800 XT? Thanks Joe |

6600GT agp. It beats the 9800 pro and is roughly equivilent to the 9800XT.

The equivalent card would be of the same generation, not the 6600GT. The equivalent of the 9800 Pro would be the FX5900 card. A 6600GT is about the same in perfromance, but pulls ahead at higher resolutions with video options enabled. |

It surpassed it sometimes on the high end tests, but rarely up until just before the NV40 paper launch when NVIDIA's shader compiler seemed to improve a LOT and application specific fixes implemented. Not like anyone's really interested, but 5950U's are very rare nowadays. You can't find them for anything less than 300USD commonly and I don't know of any place other than eBay that actually stocks them. The 5900XT replaced like 4 similar models. |

From that generation, the FX5900 was the top dog, but the FX cards were ****. Current price wise, the 6600GT is a similar price, and absolutely kills the 9800 pro performance wise Thanks Joe |

Thanks for taking the time to respond. Your response is helpful. I want to
upgrade my Radeon 9000 64Mb card, but I don't need the newest card available, although I sure would like to have one. Joe "Joe727" wrote in message ... Hi - What's the nVidia equivalent of an ATi Radeon 9800 Pro? And, what's the nVidia equivalent of an ATi Radeon 9800 XT? Thanks Joe |

The FX5900 is a poor equivalent because of it's poor 32bit shader performance, hence it is signficantly slower in some games. To be exact; the DX9 shader spec calls for 16 and 24 bit precision math, which the Radeon does. The FX does 16 and 32 bit precision. Rather than write two different codepaths for shaders, devs usually write for 24 bit full precision and force the FX to 16 bit, which is obviously slower. Or in the case of HL2, the devs force the FX to DX8 spec period. There are games which were written for both codepaths, like TR: AoD, and the FX5900 and 9800 Pro are pretty much neck and neck performance wise. But being as the FX is difficult to code the shaders for, and there are far better cards out now without this problem, I think most devs will simply force DX8 for FX cards now. So the Radeon 9800 Pro is the better choice, considering that flaw in the FX series. McG. |

Actually for many of the latest 3d games, they make large use of the FX's 32bit shaders, hence they perform a lot weaker than the 9800pro. The 6600GT is a better choice compared to both, it has full speed 32bit precision, more than the 9800pro's 24bit. And performs faster in many games. |

My FX5900 is getting long in tooth and its fan died. Card still works fine tho. I replaced it with an eVGA 6800 128 meg (AGP). I'll replace that in the next couple weeks though with a 6800 GT. Yep, I like *ALL* the bells n whistles McG. |
