Default nv4_disp.dll presented at time of Blue Screen of Death

The PC has these random crashes and always the NV4_DISP.DLL is presented.

Dell Vostro 400
1 GB memory
8300GS with latest Dell driver available

I have downloaded and tried to install the nvidia driver from the nvidia
website, but the install [itself] blue screens. sigh

Remove current driver and all directory remnants.

Nvidia site driver always blue screens. Installation is incomplete.

Dell driver package will install, but random crashes that point to
NV4_DISP.DLL persist.

User has 19" wide-screen LCD but prefers a non-native display
resolution. Could that be a candidate for the crashes?

Dell diagnostics suggest no problem with the video card.

No malware or viruses are detected. Even GMER comes up clean.

So, what else might I try before we replace the video card?

Thanks in advance.

Vostro 8300GS drivers

Download and install the 158.28 drivers from Dell for that specific model.
Or roll back the driver.
