Default Video card advice needed

I have an Athlon XP 1800+ on an Abit KD7-E mobo with a GF3 and 768MB
SDRAM. I don't want to upgrade my whole system, but just get a video
card that will allow me to play HL2 as well as possible with my
current system. What card would you recommend compatible with this
system in the $200-$350 range? Would an ASUS GeForce 6800GT for $330
be the best bang for the money? Thanks for any assistance.

You would probably be held back by the cpu if you went with a 6800 gt or
maybe even the regular 6800. Probably the best bet would be the 6600gt if
your not planning to upgrade your cpu anytime soon. There only around
200-250 also. But if your planning on upgrading the cpu 3200
or higher , go for the 6800 or 6800gt.
Btw, where is the asus geforce 6800gt for 330 ? Ive been looking for a good
price on one.
TIA

Your Abit KD7-E can take 333FSB Athlons (up to 3000+), DDR333 RAM, and has
an AGP4x port. You didn't state the speed of your RAM, so I would advise
that you do the following:

1) Buy an AGP GeForce 6600GT.
2) Buy an Athlon XP 3000+ (333FSB version).
3) If your RAM isn't up to DDR333 speeds, buy 2x 512MB PC3200.
4) Sell your XP 1700+, GeForce3 and RAM on eBay.

The above should easily be achievable for $350, recovering some of the
initial outlay with your sales.

Great idea. Thanks to everyone for the replies.

Get 6600GT, it's the Ti4200 of today.

I wouldn't get the 6800GT as it will be seriously limited by your current
CPU. In fact, probably the fasted video card I would get for your system is
an ATI 9800Pro. Even a 6600GT would be limited by your CPU.

What if he upgrades CPU/mobo in the near future? It couldn't hurt to have
too much GPU now to insure future ability, no?

I agree. I read that a lot and it doesn't make any sense. The video card will
most likely be used in the future so get what ever you can afford even if it it
is limited by your CPU. You could even pass it on to someone in future.
