Default bios won't hold second HD settings

I added a second HD to a system, and in the BIOS set it to be auto detected.
It was detected, and all is well, but when I power off the pc, the settings
are lost. What is the problem? Thanks.

1st thing to try is too fully clear the CMOS but know your settings.

Pull power cord out, find and use clear CMOS jumper and if not known
remove CMOS battery for a few mins(coffee break).
Then re-power on and try settings.
ATX powered systems cannot fully clear the CMOS/BIOS with power to the
system as a residual current is applied to the BIOS/CMOS and
incorrect/dirty data can be left in there.

Post back if no good.

The CMOS battery are likely to be dead
