Storing your computer junk
After having computer parts scattered about and in cardboard boxes and even
in laundry baskets, I finally hit on a good storage method. At first I thought of buying a bunch of those plastic containers with drawers but knew I'd end up accidentally dumping the draws and rummaging to the backs of them. And big stuff like mobos, keyboards and rolls of cat5 wouldn't fit. I finally hit on the idea of using shallow 32 qt plastic containers with latching tops. It works great. I put a couple of plastic shoes boxes in each one for the smaller parts. They're a shorter type of perforated shoebox so 2 only take up about half the space in the container, side by side. 3 longer shoeboxes would fill the whole space pretty well. I got 4 containers and 8 shoeboxes without tops for $20 total. It's best to get an even number of containers so you can form two even stacks for the back of your vehicle or when you pile them on the floor. I might get a couple more. You can carry 3 at a time but 4 gets to be a bit much, 2 is easy. The tops form a nice work surface which is indented so screws won't roll away. The brand is "Cornerstone" from Big Lots but there are many similar brands, but with slightly different shapes. Just try out the shoeboxes to make sure they fit the way you want. I got all white tops but you might want to color code them. They look rather cool in a stack. Kind of a coversation piece. GP |
