Will Sriker Extreme 680i SLI support upcoming Wolfdale and Yorkfield 45nm processors?
Hello to everybody!
I have done little research on that topic and I am still confused. Some say that 680i SLI chipset supports upcoming 45m procesors but the mainboards are not,and thy need some circuit upgrade. Here is what Nvidia spokesman sai abou this topic:"the 680i MCP fully supports both dual core Wolfdale and quad core Yorkfield, but at the board level, a motherboard circuit change is required for quad core YF".So now I wonder is Striker Exreme one of that boards that do not suppot 45nm CPU-s without circuit change or it needs just an BIOS upgrade according to anandtech :http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=3138&p=2.If it needs just a BIOS upgrade I ll be quite happy cause I wont need to change my MBO if I wish in the future to go on new processors! Thx for answers! |

Thx for answers! I tried searching the nvidia.com domain, and looking for "Wolfdale" (dual core 45nm 6MB cache). The results from forums.nvidia.com are a bit curious. Someone tested a pre-release Yorkfield and it worked. The release one didn't work properly. The 780i still doesn't overclock worth a damn. Disabling two cores seemed to help (which means when it is eventually released, a Wolfdale might work after all). Dropping the FSB slightly also seemed to help (which is pointless, but just another observation of a tester). I would rate this "a mess". http://www.altavista.com/web/results...wolfdale&aqp=& aqo=&aqn=&kgs=1&kls=0&dt=tmperiod&d2=0&dfr%5Bd%5D= 1&dfr%5Bm%5D=1&dfr%5By%5D=1980& dto%5Bd%5D=9&dto%5Bm%5D=1&dto%5By%5D=2008&filetype =&rc=dmn&swd=nvidia.com&lh=&nbq=10 If you aren't really that rich, you can afford to wait three months more, and see how it all pans out. If you are rich enough for this 45nm stuff, then just buy another motherboard. Maybe eventually, there'll be a motherboard worth buying. I guess it really boils down to how hooked you are on SLI. You could always buy one 9800GX2 when they're released, and use it on an Intel chipset board. Sort of a compromise solution. http://enthusiast.hardocp.com/articl...50aHVzaWFzdA== Paul |

FWIW my (and maybe your?) SE box has a nice sticker on the front of it that says "Support 45nm CPUs". I don't know if that's supposed to be a command or a spec though. Yes I know that it has written to support 45nm processors and it is also stated on official pages. But there is no information will it be dual core CPU-s(Wolfdale) or quad core (Yorkfield) or both.I will be satisfaied with dual core, but I would more likely see Yorkfield/Penryn in my System.FYI there is official release of new 1401 bios from asus ftp server : ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/asus/mb/so...1401.zip.Maybe it is the long avaited one which will offer 45 nm support, but I will not flash it until I see info about it on asus pages(that should be very soon I suppose).Currently I have Q6600 2.4MHz Kentsfield old B3 stepping(I would like that it is G0),not much of a overclocker on this OC friendly mobo,so I intened to replace it with new 45nm CPU which by all means and reviews offer beter OC potential. Best Regards! P.S. I am appolgizing if my english is not so good cause I am from Croatia and it is my second language. |
