Specs:
1. Asus M2N-SLI motherboard
2. WD 320GB SATA300 HD with 16MB Cache
3. AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000+
4. G-Skill DDR2 800 Dual-Channel 2GB (1GBx2)
5. Samsung SATA DVD recorder with LightScribe
6. NVIDIA 8500GT with 256MB GDDR2 128-bit PCIe x16 (Manufactured by
Biostar)

Here is what I've tried (some were just out of desperation):
1. Disconnecting the optical drives
2. Disconnecting the SATA HD and connecting a PATA HD instead.
3. Removing one stick of RAM. Then, removed the other stick of RAM. Also
tried different slots.
4. Reseating the video card.
5. Moving the video card to the other PCIe slot.
6. Checking and replugging power cables and panel connectors.
7. Clearing the BIOS

...And still nothing.

What is most likely the issue? I'm suspecting either the video card or
the
motherboard? Thanks.

Additionally,
The monitor is a known good monitor, and the power supply is a 430-watt
ThermalTake. It is also a known good component.

Bad mobo no beep, bad vid card beep, bad ram beep bad cpu beep bad psu
no beep and no fan, you have fan, bad mobo.- Hide quoted text -

I agree with this assessment. If you have a bad video card it would
still beep unless the video card is loading +5/+12 down. but if you
pull everything off of the board you should get POST beeps.

Do you have a slower CPU you can toss onto the board? Perhaps the
current BIOS doesnt support that particular CPU.

Matt

I don't have a spare AM2 processor or access to one. All I have available
are Athlon XPs, and that won't work for this... The X2 4000+ isn't exactly
the newest CPU out there, (unless it's a new revision) but that doesn't
necessarily mean the BIOS is way out of date.

No, I have not tried the cardboard test yet. I will be doing that today.

Just don't use styrofoam as a base. While non-conductive, sytrofoam can
build up a wicked static electrical charge.

I plan on using the box the motherboard came in.

If it is in a new case, make sure you didnt leave a standoff shorting out
a
spot on the back of the motherboard. Some cases come with the brass
standoffs
in the wrong places and you could be grounding out the MB in a bad way!!!!

I am re-using the case. It is an Apevia (At the time Aspire) X-Dreamer II.
I made sure as I was building it that the spacer placement was correct. The
new motherboard required 6 screws. The old one was 9. I had to remove the
3 spacers on the far right. All the other spacers were already in the
correct position.

I just got done doing the cardboard test.

I started off with the motherboard and the CPU. (With heatsink installed).
Same thing. It turned on, and that was it. No POST.

I took the CPU and heatsink off, cleaned all the thermal paste off of them,
and put new thermal paste on, and reinstalled them to make sure it was
seated correctly. Still no dice.

I finally ran the mobo by itself with nothing at all except the power
supply, and still no POST.

Next thing, so I will ship it back to newegg. Do you think I should go with
the same M2N-SLI or is there some other motherboard you would suggest
instead? I mean, was this a fluke or does this board have lots of problems?
I'm looking for one between $90 and $100. This one was $95.

Try building a minimum system OUTSIDE the case (a legal size paper pad makes
a good non-conductive base.) Start with just the motherboard, power supply,
and CPU. If you get no beep codes at this initial point, well, there you
are... it's the motherboard (if the CPU is known good.) Add components one
at a time until you no longer get a beep code (or the complete system works)
#1. add one memory module
#2. add keyboard
#3. add display adapter
#4. add monitor
#5. add second memory module
#6. add hard drive
#7. continue one hardware item at a time

It could be as simple as a short between one land on the motherboard and the
system case.

Phil Weldon

Very good suggestion, eliminate the case and work up from there!!!

I'd try another one. You got a bad board it happens. Where you really
careful when you where handling the MB? I know that when I built my PC it
was during the winter when it was super dry out and there was a lot of
static electricity. I always make sure to ground myself when I'm handling
any PC parts. JLC

Yes, I was careful, and I used a static strap the whole time while building.
Do you think I should go with the M2N-SLI again? I also saw a Biostar
TF-560 motherboard on newegg. It did not have SLI, but this is for Grandma,
who's not really a gamer. : ) It was slightly cheaper, but it had pretty
good reviews. The most common problem with it is the larger CPU heatsinks
with heatpipes don't seem to fit the mounting bracket. The heatsink I am
using does not have heatpipes, and it's the stock one that came with the
4000+.
