Default BFG GeForce FX5500oc Screen Dropouts & Trash

Got one of these new at Fry's on sale the other day and have had a lot
of trouble with it. I wanted a newer AGP card for my old office box and
these were cheap after rebate.

I installed it with the supplied CD w/v.71.84 driver and all apparently
went well, except that now after about 15-20 minutes after bootup, the
screen would drop out -- go black -- for about a second. I'm not sure
if this repeated or not later, as I come and go a lot in the office, but
_every_ time I booted up with the new card, this would happen.

I also noticed that my fonts were a little weird with the new card (for
example, as I write this, the lower-case Ms are a little aliased or
something on their top curves), and in Word I would see little bits of
"noise" on the screen. Sometimes when that dropout came, several lines
would be scrambled when it came back up.

BFG tech support was not terribly helpful. Their suggestions -- mainly
going back to the 66.93 driver after using DriverCleaner -- did not
work, as the 66.93 driver simply would not work with my system and
caused great trouble even getting the computer to a normal boot. I lost
a whole day yesterday just getting back to where I was to start with, a
boot with 71.84. I downloaded and upgraded to 71.89 and managed to get
the computer to boot properly, though this was not easy.

It is now stable (?). but I still have the original problem, namely that
black-screen dropout and messy Word functioning.

Any thoughts on this? Bad driver? Bad card? Just incompatible?

Many thanks for any help!

You can try some of the Nvidia beta drivers. There are many. Try
www.guru3d.com. I've been using 67.22 for quite awhile now and I haven't had
any problems.
