Default External monitor on laptop with GeForce4 440 Go

Hi,

I've just bought a new Mitsubishi 19" Diamond Plus 93SB CRT external
monitor to be used with my relatively new laptop, which has a GeForce4 440
Go (64Mb) video card. Now, I intended to use this external monitor as the
primary display device for the laptop permanently and then perhaps
sometimes extend the desktop over the laptop display, using the laptop as
secondary. For some reason my O/S (Windows XP Prof.) will only let me do it
the other way around, i.e. the laptop display as primary with the desktop
extended over the external CRT. XP has greyed out the 'Use this device as
the primary monitor.' option for the external monitor, forcing it to be
unchecked and has greyed it out also for the laptop LCD forcing it to be
checked. I can't find anyway to get it to allow me to change this (what's
the point in this option if you can't change it?). I have the latest
monitor driver and also have the latest NVIDIA driver for my card (however
NVIDIA's latest ForceWare 50 driver for some reason doesn't support my
card, along with the GeForce2 Go also). Also, even though there are what
look like monitor symbols on the function keys of the laptop (accessed by
pressing a 'Fn' key at the same time as pressing the function keys), none
of them succeed in switching between primary displays and there is no
related option in the BIOS configuration...

Also on a (probably) unrelated note, the display I have seen on the CRT
from this laptop is of a rather low quality. It is exhibiting what I think
is known as 'ghosting', which is especially noticeable in a text editor. It
appears that under each character, it has a shadow shifted slightly (but
very noticeably) to the right. However this is not the case when I connect
this exact same monitor to one of my desktop machines (with a GeForce 2 GTS
card). The monitor is near to no magnetic fields as far as I can tell and
I'm using the supplied cable with no extensions/adaptors/convertors etc.

I really though that setting this up as I wanted would be a simple task
consisting of not much more than plugging the monitor in... can someone
please tell me where I'm going wrong?

Thanks,
