Default computer restarts a few minutes afeter system installation begins

Hi all,
I have Compaq Proliant 5500 on 4 Xeons 550MHz with Mylex Raid
DAC960PTL1.
When I try to install freebsd or linux computer restarts during packets
loading.
I tried without Mylex controller, but even without it I have the same
problem.
By contrast, I can install without any problem Windows Serwer 2003.
All equipment and memory tests are of course OK.
Please help me to find a reason of the problem.
Thanx,
P

sounds like a linux problem ... did you provide the proper mem@=xxx
statement during your install ? it could be running out of memory.

but, im not a linux guy, so i dont really know. There are others here that
are more versed in *nix.

I've used Linux on a 5500 and I didn't need to do anything with setting
any mem= lines anywhere.. Now, I was using Fedora Core 3 which recognized
all of my 5500 RAID equipment (SA3200) without any problems -- I gather
that other flavors of Linux are not able to do that though.. You might
try the latest version of Fedora Core (v4 if I recall) and see if it behaves
better. It should boot right up and install without any problems.

Yeah, exactly what Rick said! Fedora Core 4 has never failed to
install. I would like to hear you say that you ran the Hardware
Configuration Utility and set Linux as the default operating
system...especially when I hear you say the Win installed fine, but
Linux wouldn't.

I had the same problem you describe when trying to install "Debian"
based Linux. My attempt to load Sun Solaris 10.0 resulted in absolute
failure...what a lame distribution that is. I have never tried BSD, but
please be sure that it has a fairly modern kernel...at least 2.4.x, but
hopefully 2.6.x
