Connect to www throughb router but not modem

I have two computers networked through a wired router. Both connect
to the internet without problems through the router, but if I connect
them using the cable from the modem, neither will connect. It seems
to me that in the past, I have been able to connect using the cable
from the modem in order to eliminate the router as the problem when I
was doing troubleshooting. Any ideas?

Do you get a "link" light on the network card and modem? If not, you might
have a "straight" network cable when you need a turnover cable. Many routers
are smart enough to switch the wiring around automatically.

If you do get the light, then I'd suggest that the MAC address of your NIC
is different than your router (as it should be), so your ISP considers it a
different computer and since the router already has an IP, won't give the
computer another.

Besides making sure the MAC address of the router and the test host are
the same, and without have to do a reboot, ask your ISP's DHCP server to
reassign an IP address:

ipconfig /release *
ipconfig /renew

Absolutely the first thing to do when changing the computer connected
directly to the modem (the router qualifies as a "computer") is to
remove the power from the modem, wait one minute, and restore the power.
When the modem is fully booted (the lights stabilize), then boot the
connected computer (or router).
