is it the vid card or not?

The obvious method is to change something.
First, settings that might affect motherboard timing or any overclocking.. Clean connectors and reseat cards. Add delay to a secondary HD (If possible) Remove non-essential hardware and disable drivers. Next, perhaps the power supply.
