do i need to use thermal past or can i do without it. athlon xp2600+ &
coolermaster fan rated up to 3000+

You'll need some kind of thermal interface...
1) If the heatsink comes with a pad, and it hasn't been used, then use that.
2) If the heatsink does not come with a pad, it should come with some paste.
3) If the heatsink came with a pad, but it has been used, obtain some paste.

You need either thermal paste or a thermal pad.
