Default A7N8X HDD detection

I have a system built around the A7N8X mainboard (Athlon 2700+ CPU 1GB
Corsair XMS memory standard settings). I also have a Promise ATA 133
controller card installed. All total, I have seven hard drives and
one optical drive. One of the hard drives is SATA. I boot from the
Promise card.

I have run this configuration for almost a year with absolutely no
problem. I have a TruePower 550w PS so power is not a problem.

Two weeks ago I suddendly got a blue screen of death message and a
reboot. Upon reboot one of my PATA drives did not have the correct
name and a check of properties showed it was not formatted! That blew
my mind, but I used Get It Back to completely recover the digital
files on that drive (it was not my boot drive).

Everything was find until a week later when my PC began to take longer
and longer to detect the devices connected to my main IDE controller
built into the mainboard. At the time I had two HDD and two optical
drives. I have since removed one of the opticals.

I could reboot the machine and eventually get the first set of IDE
devices detected. Then there began to be a problem detecting the for
HDDs connected to the Promise controller. It would not find any of
them or just find one or the other pair of drives.

I could reboot and get past the first IDE detection and then the
Promise detection and finally to the SATA detection.

I have reseated memory and all PCI cards. I have reconfirmed all IDE
and SATA cables. I have even replaced both cables on the Promise
Controller.

It now takes me three reboots to the the system started and
recognizing all IDE devices. In addition, I notice that sometimes the
video flickers (I have a Matrox Parhealia triple head card with two
monitors). This clears up after a few seconds and after that the
sytem runs without problems.

I am about to tear the machine down and install a new mainboard,
procesor and memory. Before I do, does anyone have any other ideas
for me? I do have another promise controller I plant to try tonight.

Thanks
