POST Error Message
I was installing some graphics software on a Compaq Presario 5716 computer
that I have. This is software that I was running on another computer with Windows XP Pro. The 5716 is running Windows XP Home and has a 850 Mhz processer. Upon starting it the next day and going throught the POST phase a "301 Keyboard error" message appeared. The computer completed the boot phase and I was in the Windows desktop when I found that the mouse was frozen and the keyboard would not respond. This happened each time I rebooted. I was unable to go to Safe Mode because the keyboard would not respond. I hooked up two more keyboards, all with the same results. I then unplugged the mouse and keyboard and booted. During the POST phase I received a "304 Keyboard or System Unit Failure" message. They problem is, without the keyboard or mouse, I can not access Safe Mode or use any diagnostic software. Even that which run in DOS mode. I was unable to boot up to the last known good restore point. I was also unable to run the Windows XP installation Disk and do a repair or full install for these functions rely on the mouse to keyboard to execute commands. The only thing I was able to find out about the 304 message was that is refers to CMOS RAM configuration not matching. There was no preexisting indication of any memory problems or graphics card problems. Is my BIOS bad? I had removed the battery and placed a new one in with no change. I appreaciate any help that any can offer. Thanks, Bill |

Bill, have you tried clearing CMOS via JP1 on the systemboard (close to the
round, flat CMOS battery)? HH "Bill W" wrote in message ... I was installing some graphics software on a Compaq Presario 5716 computer that I have. HH,
Thanks for your help. I saw your post, went down to the basement and pulled off the chasis cover to the 5716 computer. I found the JP1 pin with no problem, moving the jumper from 1-2 to 2-3 and then back again. I booted up the computer and to my jubilation, it did not show any error messages and everything was working fine. Again thanks for your help, Bill "HH" wrote in message .. .
