Default Inspiron 8000 w/7200 rpm drive?

Want to upgrade an Inspiron 8000 with a new hard drive. Is there any
reason a Hitachi 2.5" ATA 100 drive that runs at 7200rpm would not
work? Have the latest BIOS installed.

Should work fine. Are you implying that you tried the drive and it
doesn't work, or are you considering purchasing the new drive?

Thanks. No I was going to purchase one and was curious if there would
be any reason the Inspiron 8000 could not handle a 7200rpm drive (i.e.
drive controller limitation).

Such a 7 year old laptop can be expected to have a drive capacity limitation.
If you buy a 160GB it will work, but you will only be able to use about 127GB.

There are ways around this limitation. (if you have one). As the 48bit
lba limit is a common thing to be fixed in bios updates.

I have TWO of them in my Inspiron 8200...works great. Make sure you buy the
PATA version as it also exists in SATA version.
