Default 8800GTS or 8800GTX

Guys,

I am building a new system and am up to deciding which video card.

Price isn't the limitor but the GTX is ~11" long which would go right into
my drive bays so is it worth the extra performance to loose a drive or two?

I am looking forward to playing UT2k7 and Crysis.

I would like to play them at 1600X1200 will all the bells and whistles on.

Thanks!

Oh, I am only going to be running 1280X1024 or possibly 1600X1200 LCDs.

Hope this helps...

Thanks for the advice, Bill.

To be honest I really like my case, it's a nice aluminum case with great fan
placement, a filter for the incoming air, twin fans in front of my twin
Raptor drives, keeping them cool and an exhaust fun in the top.

It is a nice size that fits everything else wonderfully and I even like the
colour!

As for my power supply it's a PC Power and Cooling 750, I think that should
be more than enough any video card (I would put a PC P&C unit against any
other company's PS any day!).

I guess I am wondering if I will see a different in cards at 1600X1200 at
max settings.

Ya know, if price is not a limiter, why not get a new case that will
accomodate all your hardware? You could even include upgraded P/S to
make sure you have enough power.

you can flame my ass if you want to but before I would spend 500 plus on a
video card to game.
I would buy a ps3 or an xbox 360. They just want to much for the 88xx series
although they
are going to be releasing a cheaper version soon. Tom's Hardware had a
review on it.
Less memory but dx10 ready.

You can buy an 8800GTS with a game (Dark Messiah) for $300 at new egg.
You do not need to spend $500 to get a DX10 card, but you can if you can
afford it. As you mention, the price point will continue to fall further
as less expensive models appear very soon.

This is not news, anyone who uses a PC as a gaming platform understands
that it is by far the most expensive gaming platform.

Most importantly, that $300 gets you state of the art hardware that
gaming consoles are simply not engineered to display. So maybe you
personally do not think it is a value, many do, and more will.

I was thinking that any case that would take an E-ATX motherboard
would have plenty fo room for long video cards.

Something like:

Yep, excellent power supplies. If you were looking to go SLI with the
GTX's You might want to step up to the PC P and C Turbo Cool 1000W P/S
though.

Couldn't say. I haven't seen the games yet. If an 8800 GTX doesn't let
you run with all the bells and whistles at 1600x1200 the only present
alternitive is going SLI.

I went with full size tower cases on my two main machines which gives
plenty of room inside. The other 3 are mid size.

I am looking forward to playing UT2k7 and Crysis.

And some time earlier this winter I believe, the number of PCs for
gaming surpassed gaming consoles.

That is good, great even (and expected with Vista's release) for gaming
in general and PC gaming, double plus good.

This year expect one video card per display, and multi-monitor support
standardized (for games). The GeForce 8 series, with their dual SLI
connectors hint at that already. Of course, you crusty flight simmers
enjoy multi-monitors most likely already, so no great gain there.

However, multi-core CPUs are wonderful for (optimized) flight sims, and
the idea(l) of one core (or two) per gpu core (or two) per monitor per
eyeball is kinda exciting for any game, not just simming. Supreme
Commander is a worthy game for dual monitors methinks.

That gear all adds up, and when a PS3 costs less than one monitor...or a
Wii less than a flight stick, you better love your hobby and your banker!
