Default Installing XP Pro SP2 ed and ati graphics card problems

I have just built a new system with xp pro sp2 ed software - My Hardware is
below:

AMD A64 4400 x 2 CPU
2 x 512mb DDR pc4400 ddr (G.Skill)
MSI K8N Diamond SLI motherboard (Nvidia NForce 4 chipset)
ATI X1800XT 512mb PCI-Express Graphics Card
XP Pro SP2 Eddition

The xp installation goes without problem and the NF4 drivers install without
error. I then install all windows updates including .NET 1.1 and .NET 2.0 -
all fine. All the hassle happens when I then install the graphics drivers
version 5.13 which includes the Catalyst Control Centre. After these
drivers have been installed windows boots to the XP Screen (Black Screen
with blue status bar) and just hangs - the blue bar keeps moving but thats
it - I'm on my fifth install and am now wishing I'd stuck to nvidia cards.

Can anyone advise please? Is there a patch or some magical solution? I've
googled the issue and its not uncommon but I have yet to find a solution.
Sorry for cross posting, desperate to get this resolved.

TIA

Chris

I've heard that ATI products sometimes have problems with Nvidia drivers.
You could try the following if you're willing to reinstall your system
again:

1. Before reinstalling, go to your BIOS and make sure that your on-board
video is disabled and that your initial monitor is set for the ATI slot.

2. After reinstalling you'll be looking at a VGA image on your monitor and
would normally be installing all of your MB drivers. This time, do not
install the Nvidia drivers - they shouldn't be needed.

3. Completely update your OS via Windows Update, and then go to the ATI site
and download the newest versions of their drivers and Catalyst suite and
install using them instead of your installation disk.

4. Cross your fingers and reboot.

I hope this helps...

try the 5.12 drivers in the older format with standard Control Panel and not
the resource hungry CCC and ditch NET 2.0

Try the Omega drivers?

Hi all,

The NF4 drivers are essential for the motherboard....no way around that.

I have not tried 5.12 or omega - what is the difference with these?

This has been very, very frustrating - will ditching .net 2.0 make any
difference?

The problems seem to revolve around ccc....

I just remembered something that may help.
enter the BIOS of your BOARD,enter cell menu
push and hold...Shift..then F2..then ALT..then..F3..(U must have all 4
pressed down when you finish..it may take a try or 2 to get it).a new menu
may appear depending on your board..there should be an option called...
NV-ATI speed up....make sure it is disabled...

5.12 was the last control panel version without CCC
omega drivers are optimized for gaming.
..net is another lovely bloated MS resource hogging idea that isnt
necessary.

The Omega drivers have been useful for laptop users where the
authentic drivers don't work at all. I just thought that it might be
worth a try.
