Default XP pro freeze on boot up with new Philips CDRW

I've just replaced an old cd-rom with a cdrw a Philips PCRW5232K/00
and when I try to boot XP Pro it freezes. Any clues why this
happens. I have checked the usual settings and that everything is
connected, but still no joy. I have tried connecting the old cd-rom
and setting the other drive as the slave and this seems to work, but
is a little slower than it used to be. Is there someway I can get
around this?

Some background on the hardwa

Asus socket A mainboard
1 gb Athlon
Barracuda HD
Samaung CD
Philips 52 writer
Generic sound card
Nvidia 64 graphics card
Generic 56kbs modem

Is the secondary IDE port set to auto detect the secondary master cd
device? Check in the BIOS.
