Default Fedora Core 1, Linux Kernel 2.6.7, Nvidia 6800 Ultra, X-Windows starts, but exiting back to console locks PC?

I have the latest Nvidia driver for the card and X-Windows is running great,
but as soon as I exit X and go back to the console, the screen has three
horizontal white lines at equal intervals down the screen and the machine is
locked. Ive even had it straight reboot.

Card is (now) running great on XP (machine is a dual OS boot).

Motherboard is an ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe.

Any help much appreciated.
