Default OS related printer problem

I have problem with my Brother HL-1240 printer. It will not work together
with Windows XP.

First I thought that it was some error related to the printer. But one day
I tried the Knoppix Linux distribution (boot from CD) and suddenly the
printer worked and I was able to print out documents.

Obviously the problem is not related to the printer or the cable.

I have the latest drivers from Brother. What can I do more to make my
printer work under Windows?

Any ideas appreciated.

Best Regards,
Henrik
