Default Ubuntu and nVidia drivers

Hi everyone.

I have an Asus A7N266-VM mobo (nVidia chipset), and I want to load
Ubuntu onto it.
I know there are lots of problems with Linux and nVidia drivers on the
A7N266.
Does anyone know anything about this, and has it been resolved in the
latter versions of Linux?
Or the nVidia chipset drivers?
I cant get Mandrake 7.2 to run on this board. But I am a linux noobie.
I get an " Error Selected Item cannot fit into memory" message when
trying to load it.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
