Default CPU preference?

I know this is an Nvidia board- but need some insight. Im trying to build a
system from the motherboard, CPU to a new Nvidia card. Something that works
well with the Geforce 7950 or 8800 series. Was just curious as to what
people recommend. Ive been loyal to AMD Athlon- but am willing to hear other
recommendations..
Thx..

There is an article here, if you want to compare the relative
merits of the competitors:

Also, since you mention 8800... although I don't have links handy, there's
some benchmarks out there that show the 8800 can be affected by a slower
CPU. Basically, the card is so fast that if a high-end CPU isn't paired
with it that can feed it data fast enough, it ends up being 'starved' and
doesn't perform as fast as it can. In other words, if you go for an 8800,
don't skimp on the CPU.

That article says a lot about FPS in games and apps, but it
says nothing about the patches needed for the AMD dual
cores that ( try to ) prevent screen stuttering in games.
It is what they don't tell you that can get you screwed.
The Pentium dual cores don't need those patches in
games, because they don't have sync problems like
the AMD X2s have. Here's the TRUTH . On an AMD
X2 machine, your games will run with pauses and
screen stutters, and there is no real fix for that. If
you want an AMD game box, use one of the faster
single core CPUs ... or a dual core Pentium is very
good.

I have a 939 X2 4200 and I have no problem with stuttering in games. After
the first AMD dual-cores were released and exposed the poor programming in
many games those games still supported were patched and the problem went
away. MS CFS3, which is no longer supported but still has a strong user
base, was notorious for stuttering on AMD dual-cores until AMD released
v1.3.2.14 of its dual-core driver and the dual-core optimizer (which
replaced MS Hotfix 896256). Interestingly, although CFS3 no longer stutters
on AMD dual-cores and was never known to stutter on Pentium D dual-cores,
the problem has resurfaced with certain Core 2 Duos (for reasons not
understood the problem seems more prevalent on but not confined to Yonahs
than Conroes). I note also that although MS withdrew Hotfix 896256 v3 from
general release when AMD released its dual-core optimizer, it has since
rereleased it (v4) for the new Intels.

The truth as you see it. I have an AMD dual core and have yet to see ANY
stutters.

I use an AMD X2 3800, on Win XP sp1, I have never installed any AMD drivers
or optimizations, and havent had any of the problems people mention in games
like Doom 3, Far Cry, Quake 4, Oblivion, FEAR, STALKER, or others.
Also running 2gig Kingston Valueram (4 x 512), Gainward 7800gs+ 512 silent,
Creative SB Live 5.1, Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 pro, 2x Seagate 250's, 1x WD
160 Hdd. on Gigabyte K8NSC-939 mobo.
