Is this possible?
If its a software modem, yes, it could cause problems under high loads.
Windows has to do a large proportion of the work for a HSP/HSF modem, around 40% of the "driver" being a replacement for hardware parts ('cos it's cheaper.) Also, for the other stuttering, have you got the highest ATA rate set? Are your IDE cables ATA100/133 capable? Also I know with the PCChips mobo's, they perform so much better (under 2000 & XP) if the PC power control is set to ACPI in the bios. "I think, therefore I'm right." "Bobby" wrote in message ... A few weeks ago my modem began to misbehave. It continually disconnected from the Internet. Sometimes it connected for a few seconds, sometimes it connected for an hour. But then it went dead and (eventually) disconnected. I have two telephone lines and two ISP accounts and bought a new modem so I've tried every possible permutation of modem, ISP and telephone line - and nothing works. I'm about to get broadband so I've ignored the problem. I just keep connecting when it disconnects. But I've recently spotted a trend. The line tends to go dead when there's a lot of CPU/HD activity - such as loading another program. I've also noticed that music playback is affected when I do a few things at the on time on my PC (it stutters or repeats for a few seconds). My PC is reasonably up-to-date... Athlon 2000+, 512 Mb, 60Gb HD, GF5200 video so it's not like I'm using an ancient PC. Could CPU/HD activity affect my modem? Could there be something wrong with my motherboard? My PC otherwise works fine - and it's speed is OK too (I'm about to play Vice City which runs fine). I'm really at a loss with this problem. Help appreciated. Cheers. Bobby |

If it has DMA check its resources, make sure it isnt conflicting with any
other IRQ's or Bus Addresses "Bobby" wrote in message ... A few weeks ago my modem began to misbehave. It continually disconnected from the Internet.
