Defective 7800gs agp card?
Just received and installed an eVGA 7800 GS-CO AGP card from newegg and am
having problems. I deleted all the ATI driver files before doing the hardware install. After putting in the new card, was able to get into Windows XP ok and and install the latest drivers from Nvidia without a problem. I then tried to run an older game - Civ3 and the system shut down completely. Tried restarting several times but the system kept shutting off before the monitor would display anything. I then tried unplugging everythig and reseating the card and the system did start to come up. A message was displayed saying the overclock had failed and asking whether or not I wanted to reset the bios settings to default. Guess I should have said yes, but I selected no and the system immediately shut down. At that point I took the card out and re-installed the old ati radeon card without problems. I did notice what I thought was a burnt smell when removing the old card. This is the first time I've ever had problems like this installing a new card or piece of hardware. Guess I've just been lucky in the past. Anyways, does this seem to you guys that the card is defective? Should I just return it to newegg for a replacement or is there something else I should try? Am running this off an asus p4c800-e deluxe motherboard with a P4 3.2 processor and 1 gig ram. The power supply is an antec rated at 480 watts. I did a complete renistall of everything a few months ago and all has been well with the system. And as I said, all seems to be working well with the old card. Thanks for any help on this. |

Defective 7800gs agp card?
Try restarting the computer by holding down the delete key. Then go into the
bios settings and be sure they apply to the new video card. Such as AGP 256 etc.. Then try it again.. "Greg" wrote in message . .. Defective 7800gs agp card?
Thanks for the tip. I did adjust the agp aperture size from 64 to 128.
Have had no problems yet. Have to say I'm a little surprised that did the trick. I assumed that a 64 size would be fine on a 256mb card. When I put my last system together a couple of years ago I was told that the aperture size should be 1/4 the card's memory size. Anyways, thanks much. This card is much quieter than the radeon I had in. "Spidious" wrote in message news:N7W3g.704287$084.504626@attbi_s22... Try restarting the computer by holding down the delete key. I'm almost willing to bet that it was a coincidence that it worked after you changed it, but I've seen some weird stuff when setting that. My system slows down unbelievably if I set the aperture to 4MB. Any other value, it runs fine. RF. |

On some systems, setting AGP aperture lower than 16 or 32MB will disable AGP transfers altogether (transfers will run at PCI/33MHz or even ISA/8.33MHz speed). This accounts for your slowdown. |

Could be that some other setting in the bios was unintentionally changed by me which resulted in the correction of the card's behavior. Or perhaps it was physically connected better the second time around. It's been a couple of years since I put the computer together and haven't done much modification of it till now, so am a little rusty at this sort of thing. Most likely some misstep on my part. Am still thankful for the poster's original suggestion because it did result in a correctly working system. |

Defective 7800gs agp card?
When I first got my card. I tried 128 to see if there was any difference.
And for some reason it messed up more often. Set it up to 256 and it flies. While at it you might go over to NVIDIA and download the latest BETA driver 84.43 It made a big difference in all of my Futuremark scores ! And the card is actually running 2 degrees c...... cooler !
