Cleaning CD & DVD drives [Was: What's the life expectancy of a DVD drive?]

You don't need to take it apart. There are cleaning CDs available that have a small brush imbedded in them. Just play it for ten seconds or so and it will do the job for you. Use it regularly, say once a week. I've never been game to use one of those things. Do they actually work like they claim, without buggering things? [snip] Cheers, Phred. -- LID |

They don't do any harm if used appropriately. They also will do nothing for
greasy dirt like smoke, only move some dust around. "Phred" wrote in message ... In article , wrote: You don't need to take it apart. Do they actually work like they claim, without buggering things? They don't "harm" - but all they do do, is move the dust around. Better to take it apart once every six months, buy a GENUINE chamios, cut a strip of little 1cm squares and a small bottle of isopropyl alcohol from a chemist. Put a piece of chamois to the bottle opening, tip the bottle up, squeeze out any excess (don't have it dripping) and wipe the lens in one direction ONCE. (If you think it needs another wipe, turn it over - don't wipe again with the same side, as it now has dirt on it that will scratch the lens if you wipe it over again.) Then discard that piece of chamois - same reason. Allan. Better than using chamois, buy some lint free cloths and use them, use each section for one wipe and discard These are easier to find and cheaper overall.
