8600 Series
If they are supposed to be coming out tomorrow, how come I see no news? Nvidia's own sire has nothing on them. What is the story?

NDAs for benchmarks usually lift on the day of the launch. News have been
trickling in: http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=6932 These guys have been doing voltage mods and hardcore overclocking to this card for over two weeks now: http://www.vr-zone.com/?i=4875 . VR-Zone probably isn't under an NDA (i.e. they got their cards from elsewhere). Performance of the 8600GTS (at stock speeds) seems to be on par with the 7900GT (which, if you think about it, would make it slower in many games than an X1950 Pro selling for the same price). http://www.vr-zone.com/?i=4883 -- "War is the continuation of politics by other means. I keep seeing a 128-bit bus on the 8600's anyway. All I was doing was holding out for the video capture anyway... |

All the early reviews seem to point at the G84/86 being intentionally crippled by it's weak bus size. I think NVIDIA got scared that a midrange part with a 256-bit bus, 1/2 to 2/3 the shader units and and enough clock speed might encroach on the 8800GTS 320MB. Nevertheless, you'd be nuts to get an 8600 (roughly 220-240'ish) when a 8800GTS can be had for 279 bucks and a 20 dollar rebate! |

I won't get it for 3 days however... |
