ATA adapter card install questions

I bought a Maxtor 160gig HDrive. Copied my system to it. But am still
booting off my old drive.

Now I've bought the ATA 133 adapter card. I put it in and booted up
with my drives still hooked to my ATA 100 motherboard. Got an 'adapter
not recognized cause nothings hooked to it' type of message. That
caused me to stop and ask some questions before I attempt to go any
further.

When I have the adatper card installed and hooked up, am I required to
plug both hard drives and both CDs into it? In other words, are the
ATA slots on my motherboard still usable or do they become obsolete?
Both the motherboard and the adapter have 2 slots, labled #1 and #2.
What order of priority are they?

I don't understand the instuctions I downloaded very well.
What I want to do...if I can...is to leave my old HD plugged into my
motherboard. Then my new Maxtor drive will plug into the (#1?) slot on
the adapter card. Then I install the adapter driver and format the
drive and then transfer the system files using MaxBlast 3.

Thats my hope and plan. But otherwise, let me ask this...Should I just
plug both drives into the adapter and set it up from there and forget
using the motherboard slots? Can I plug both drives into the adapter
before its drivers are set up, and boot my old drive through the
adapter?

Holy cow...I'm confused. If this makes no sense I'll try to restate
it. If it makes sense...help, if you can. Thanks...
