Default Any recommended Soundcards?

Heya,

I know this is the wrong group but since there was some intelligent feedback
going on here, figured this would be the best place to ask.

I seem to be having some Sound issues since upgrading to XP. Sound loops,
sometimes crackling sounds, etc.

I am currently using Soundblaster, PCI 512. I have tried different slots on
my Motherboard and upgraded to the latest drivers. Although, the latest
drivers for XP on this card according to the Creative labs sight is dated
2001 ??!!??

So...any recommended sound cards? or is there a general site like the one I
got from here, guru3d.com for current sound drivers?

Thanks!

I've been happy with my Turtle Beach Santa Cruz,
Used with Win98SE and now Win XP.
If you switch to a none Creative labs sound card,
make sure you remove all Creative labs registry stuff.

Most likely not the soundcard but an irq-sharing issue - once the sb-card is on
its own irq the problem goes away! XP is prone to this problem coz XP is
junkware...

Huh? With APIC selected in bios XP gives you 23 IRQ's. XP handles IRQ
addressing just fine. What OS do you recommend we run our games on?

There are many motherboards that have two or more slots tied together so
that both share the same interrupt. The operating system cannot
override this.

As for XP handling IRQ addressing just fine, there is a very special
place in Hell reserved for whoever was responsible for implementing Plug
and Pray without manual overrides. You're basically forced to trust an
Artificial Stupidity, which is always an unwise course of action.

Those additional irqs are based on irq-sharing(!) - these are not
physically(hardware) irqs.
That's, for one, why XP is troubled this much and slooow as well. Technically
that irq thingy is ok for slower devices but share same irq between video and
audio and you'll see what I mean. I wonder why the industry is not going to get
something decent on their drawing-table. 64 true (hardware) irqs would be
sufficient for the near future - however, the cpus would need to be altered as
well to handle 64 irqs - far east too dumb to get it going? Instead the whole
industry still sticks to Dos limitations! - our hardware industry is constantly
making a fool of us users by not developing further instead sticking to
far-outdated technics.

In win95b/win98 and ME you can revert to none ACPI usage of IRQs quite
easily like this,
http://www.geocities.com/sheppola/acpi.html
and then have more control of IRQ assigning.

Don't know for XP so be a,"Guinea Pig"?

Personally I don't have problems with IRQ sharing. This is not MS's
fault usually but lazy or inept hardware makers who don't make their
devices correctly.
Also a common mistake as in the posts is to trust Plug in and
Praysic but this can be defeated and still be enabled as per,
http://www.geocities.com/sheppola/drivers.html

Note:
Mother boards that allow the reservation of IRQs for specific PCI
slots are overridden by ACPI in the O/S if it's enabled.

To be honest, this seems to be very specific to particular hardware
configurations. I had all sorts of crackling problems with an
Audigy 1 on an AMD / VIA system (and it seems to be these systems
that experience these issues most often), but an Audigy 2 is now
running flawlessly on the same system. You here such conflicting
reports from different users that I hesitate to recommend it any
more strongly than to say that it works for me -- and is a damn fine
piece of kit for the money, especially with the breakout box that
comes with the Platinum eX.

What I can say is that the cheap budget Creative Labs PCI 128 cards
have worked with many boards I've installed e.g Via/SiS/Intel and Ali
chip sets and I know consider a little gem of a card especially for
the price.
Although not a flashy card comparing it side by side with a 5.1
digital I still think it has a richer and brighter sound than the
5.1.I'm a little dismayed with this as I bought the 5.1 as
an,"Upgrade" because they have dropped in price but I have to say I'm
not that impressed.I don't use a 5.1 sound system preferring to
line-out to my Hi-Fi when I want a bigger sound so I have no need of
it at the moment.

The drivers have never given me a problem on any chip set and are nice
and simple and robust and don't add any silly bootup entries like the
5.1 and I suspect the Audigy cards may?
Also I found webupdated drivers that gave it hardware Bass And Treble
and some newer software that Creative didn't put on the install Cd
that gives me a wave recorder that can record from all sources
like,"Total Recorder" but better IMHO.

I've gone back to the PCI 128 and removed the 5.1 and may just sell it
on.I'm sure also even with my knowledge that it may have caused some
delays in online gaming which I couldn't fix but this may just be me
not being happy with it :/
All-in all I think creative,"Dropped-the-ball" with the 5.1s and
drivers.I hope the audigy cards don't suffer from this :/

Still miss my old AWE 64grin.
