Now all the evidence is in, the conclusion is much simpler to come to: ATi
appears to have some kind of driver bug (possibly affecting gamma levels)
that makes things appear darker than they should. There seems to be no
performance benefit from doing this, so to call it a 'questionable
optimisation' seems wholly inappropriate in light of this. It's a bug, pure
and simple, and one that ATi will hopefully give a high priority in
resolving. Of course, we are still waiting for word from ATi themselves
about the issues brought up by Tom's Hardware, so hopefully once we have
that the case will be closed... Until the next time one IHV decides to
reveal something a competitor is rendering incorrectly at least.

From personal experience I've seen big differences in the output of the
Geforce4 tests and the ATi 9800 pro's. The biggest I've seen on my machine
in default settings mode was in the aircraft sections, with the geforce4 on
test no pilots or textures inside the aircraft, I was suprised to see them
when I installed my 9800.

But what was that difference? Did you simply turn off some rendering
in the Geforce 4? Is that important?

Oh, now there is a test between competitors on an even standing, the
previous generation of nVidia cards vs the next-to-top-of-the-line ATI card.

What is your next one going to be buddy, Mark Hamill vs Mike Tyson?
