I have a GeForce4 MX 440 with the latest nvidia drivers, and DirectX 9.0

"or
better". This is on a system running WinXP (p4 2.67 GHz, 512mb ram, 120gb
western digital 8mb cache hdd...)

You could conceivably try out older drivers. My GF4 Ti 4200 is unstable
with the latest drivers, but version 41.09 works great.
