Default WinXP burned files firs then Nero has lost the files

I have a notebook with XP installed which I used to burn a rewriteable cd
with some picture files and music files. I allowed a friend of mine to
install Nero an mess around trying to burn something onto the cd and now
although the cd is showing 350 mb free, the files cannot be seen or viewed.
Before he installed Nero and messed around they could. Is there something I
can do or are the files lost??
