Default 4214R Drives Stopping and Starting

I have a Compaq 4214R rackmount drive case where the drives in slots 3 and 4
are stopping after about 15 minutes of use. The next time a Windows 2003
application needs a file on the file system that is mirrored on the drives
in those slots, you can hear the drives starting up, and after a long pause
the disk is accessed.

What would cause such bizarre behavior? This is not happening on the C:
drive that is on drives in slots 1 and 2, but only on the D: drive
associated with slots 3 and 4. Would it be caused by defective drive
slots? What about the SCSI controller on the back of the 4214R? Could
that be bad?
