The DL380's are about a month away from being fully decommissioned. Apparently "for some reason" the new Dells are not performing quite as well as expected! I have been promised the machines when they are completely off line (there are five, of course I couldn't get the specs yet). The racks were enormous, measuring 80" tall. They had been stripped of all rails, pdu's and even fans. Because of the size I was forced to turn them in for scrap steel. I did get a set of four HP 4100TN lasers that I have fully tested and found to be in perfect working order. There are four of the smaller Laserjet 5P printers. I also got eleven very nice Netvista's that range from 866m up to 966M (perfect workstations for the charity, and a handful for my tinkering). I got two 21" monitors (both working perfectly) and one of them is a Compaq! So, unless you have a need for one of these fast lasers, we will have to put things on hold for awhile. Jeff |

Jeff I am sure either a 5P or 4100TN would be better than the 4PPm LaserJet4P (circa 1994) that i am currently using ... all the better if there is a JetDirect card. I know the 5P doesnt natively support networking, but I have some ethernet to parallel print servers that work nicely. Those racks would be nothing but scrap to me too. Was hoping for maybe some rails for G1 gear .... like 360's, 380's, and 6400R's. You have any of that laying about? How about for storage subsystems ... RA4000's, UE's, U2's, F2's. etc ... ? Dells not working as expected .... go figure! Actually, its a bit of a black art to get those things to work well (which, naturally, I am versed in). Know thy enemy and all that. - LC |

I know the 5P doesnt natively support networking, but I have some ethernet to parallel print servers that work nicely. As I said, the 4100's are very nice. They not only have the 10/100 JetDirects, but they all come with the second letter tray (making them able to hold 1000 sheets). I have run every test that I know of...they even indicate that the "maintenance kit" is not neccessary for another 16600 pages (on the worst of the four). This is one of those times that I wish this group allowed picture posting. The 5P should (in my opinion) never be considered anything more than a personal printer tied to a personal workstation. It can only handle about 10ppm...where those 4100's roll out pages (very smoothly and quietly) at 29ppm. The 4100 only takes five seconds to FULLY power up from a cold stop to the "Ready" indicator...something most customers complained about in earlier models. Until now, I have been running a 4V on the network. It has always run well, and has the duplexor option and 128M installed. You can take that away, if you can bear the weight! Those racks would be nothing but scrap to me too. Was hoping for maybe some rails for G1 gear ... like 360's, 380's, and 6400R's. You have any of that laying about? How about for storage subsystems ... RA4000's, UE's, U2's, F2's. etc ... ? I think I may have one rail set designed for the 3000, but that would be it. I was tempted (for about 23 seconds) to bring one rack home to use as a garage cabinet for my Sams Club purchases! They had the sides, the plexiglass front door and four shelves...pretty good for storing the extra toilet paper, paper towels, and can goods. Dells not working as expected .... go figure! Actually, its a bit of a black art to get those things to work well (which, naturally, I am versed in). Know thy enemy and all that. - LC I actually have a lot of Dell Factory Certification myself. It made "turning my back" an educated decision. Jeff |

Jeff Usually, it comes down to Firmware, Driver, and the proper OpenManage component installations. Once you get the ArrayManager, or newer StorageManagement components installed, one needs to tune the Caching and I/O policies on the Array controller to get the most out of them. The disk I/O is usually the best thing about them, other than the price. But, you get what you pay for them. I would never want to setup another Dell IT Assistant environment for as long as I live !!! .... So, its not unlike setting up a reliable proliant server. People that complain about them normally take the OS out of the box and complain about thier instability. Its all in the drivers and apps ..... - LC |

Please let me know if you need an undestudy...or if you need some available "hands" to expand into Lake County. Jeff |
