Third Party Enclosure for Rackmount System
Does anyone know of a small tower or desktop enclosure that a rackmount 2U
system like DL385 could be inserted into to convert to a "desktop" format? HP doesn't have the part, so third party is okay. -- Will |

There are abundant choices from many manufacturers of small and portable 19 inch racks cabinets that range in size from 1U upwards. They are often used to house A/V equipment and scientific gear for use in the field. Google for "equipment racks" and manufactures like BUD or use the Thomas Register. Regards, Michael |

Regards, Michael I dont believe that was what the OP was asking. If I am not mistaken, he was asking if there was a way to 'convert' a DL385 into a workstation, or tower, form factor. There are no such kits for the 2U HP servers (with the single exception of the rx/rz2600/2620 integrity workstations). - LC |

I read his statement: '...DL385 could be inserted into to convert to a "desktop" format' to include a method whereby one could house a rackmount pc in an enclosure suitable for placement on a worksurface. Surely the tiny rack enclosures common in the industry would serve that purpose. There are many examples of this type of enclosure used for housing ruggedized and industrial computers on worksurfaces; many DEC small computers had such an option but since DEC's prices were somewhat inflated, folks often bought the enclosures from OEMs. Current small racks range from utilitarian boxes to stylish rounded corner models in a variety of colors. In the 2U formfactor, they don't occupy any more volume on a desk than an AT-class PC from the 1980s. Regards, Michael |

If you do find something, make sure it's deep enough, that cooling / air circulation is good, and think about the noise level it's going to generate. |
