Default How to configure SNMP for Insight Agents

Ok ..

First, you have to install the SNMP service, and make sure it matches the SP
level of your server.

Next, go to the services MMC snap-in, or Manage your computer, and go to
services.

Locate the SNMP service, and look at its properties.

Tabs on the properties page:

AGENT:

You dont really have to put anything in here, but I usually do. I also make
sure all 5 checkboxes are checked.

TRAPS:

This is where you create a community string. Most SNMP management apps are
configured to use the widely accepted defacto string of ' public ' (case
sensitive) for read-only things.

Choose a string and Add to list. Once you have a string, you can configure a
trap destination. If you have an SNMP console, enter its FQDN here, or its
IP address. To make sure that your SMHP works, be sure that one of the
destinations is localhost.

Security:

You should see "public' in the list as read only. You can add other strings
which you may have here, and set the rights accordingly.

I suggest making something unique and hard to guess, if you want to give
write or create rights. Write will allow you to clear logs and events from
within the SMHP.

For those obsessed with security, if you are just trying to get the homepage
to work, change the default selection from "accept SNMP packets from any
host" to " accept SNMP packets from these hosts" ... and just put in
localhost. That way, your server cannot be remotely interrogated using
SNMP.

If you still have problems ... google is your friend.
