Default Phone question

I have a phone on my desk that works fine.
I just got a fax modem to send faxes
Now when i plug the desk phone into the modem i get no dial tone.
Any suggestions

The modem is a Conexant D850 PCI V.92

With due respect, I believe that you have the line in and phone jack wires
reversed. Try swapping them. The phone should be dead when the fax is
working and live when not faxing.
