Default cpu Q

what is the fastest a cpu can go ?
I have been told there is a limit on how many Mhz you can get out of a cpu

Top speed is 30mph. I've read some going 45kph

The limit is determined by your cooling arrangements.
If you can take your chips down to superconductor temps (very low,
maybe -200C), you could run an XP DUTC at 5GHz - I'm sure.
Water cooling can get that chip up to 2800 MHz.

Thought it was about Mach IV or however fast ICBMs go! :-)

Yeah but IIRC the XP is rated at -40C, after about -100 it probably
wouldn't matter how cold it was.

Ed

The ratings do not apply to over clocking.

Lets assume that 40șC is the normal core temperature of a CPU. At 0șC
performance is approximately 25% improved. At -50șC performance improved by
45%. And at -100șC it improved 60%. Example: 2000Mhz at 40șC, 2500Mhz at
0șC, 2900Mhz at -50șC and 3200Mhz at -100șC.

By increasing the core voltage to the CPU these figures may be improved by
another 15% to 25%. This improvement due to core voltage increase is not as
great at lower temperatures.

Below -110șC there is no speed increases due to the material that the
current CPU's are made from. If a CPU were made from a more suitable
material then improvements could be expected down to close to absolute zero.

If you look at the figures posted by some of the hard core over clockers you
will see that for AMD Anthlon CPU's they top out about 3300Mhz ±. There is
not much increase between a vapor chilled CPU at -10șC with 2.2 volts and
one at -100șC at 2.0 volts.
