Looking to upgrade my present FX 5200 card for a Geforce 6800 GT, my present power supply is 300w will this support the new card From what I've read upto now doing a quick Google search it seems like 300w is the minimum depending on what other hardware you have in your machine of course. The only possible problem, as you're going to have the minimum supply, is if the quality isn't upto scratch it could struggle. http://forums.anandtech.com/messagev...readid=1373019 http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NjM3LDE I don't have a GF6 myself but for the cost of a new psu I think I'd want to upgrade to a 350w or 400w to make sure that it will be able to handle the extra load. Only if it's a top quality 300W PS. Antec, inwin etc. Otherwise get a decent
450W PS. Looking to upgrade my present FX 5200 card for a Geforce 6800 GT, my present power supply is 300w will this support the new card |

300 Watts is NOT enough power.

Of course if your PSU is a p.o.s. and it says 300w when it means 150w, then you might have a problem. But a decent 300watter will be OK. Chip -- DaveW "Barry Barlow" wrote in message ... Really my point is that DaveW said 300w is NOT enough, and emphatically, it CAN be. (Actually I have since seen someone running a 6800GT (overclocked!) on a 150w PSU. Yes 150w. I was pondering getting a 330W one for a system I'll be putting together (athlon 2500+ barton, 1x IDE hard drive, 1x DVD-ROM, no burners, not even having the monitor connected to that PSU, 512gig ram, fx5700 ultra or maybe a fx5900xt) The box will solely be used for games, and getting online if my main box dies for a bit. :P -- Linux Jay My Realm: http://www.myrealm.co.uk Eddie's Extensions: http://freshmeat.net/projects/eddie42 Things Not to Say During Sex #87. I am using an Antec True 330 with the following; NF7-S 2500+ Barton 512 Megs 3200 Geforce 4 - 4200 overclocked 325/650 2 Hard Drives 7200 30GB and 5400 8GB 1 CD-RW Drive 1 CD-ROM Drive 8 Case fans Including a 80mm Tornado on CPU, but not counting the 2 PS fans. I measured the +3.3, +12 and +5 at the back of ATX connector. They were all right on the money even though the NF7-S displays them in the bios as being slightly low but within ATX specs. Whatever supply you get, purchase as much wattage as you can afford. My 330 is running fine, but I look back and wish I would have gotten more wattage when I purchased it. That way in the future you won't have to ever worry about having enough for any future upgrades. |
