Default memory problem

I have a friend who has a new laptop that is supposed to have 256 M of RAM.
It shows up as 192. Is it a problem with the stick or is it a laptop thing
that all the memory doesn't show up?

Thanks
~Patty Pittman

Post the make and model and maybe someone can help you
in more detail. Also how is the memory installed, 1 SODIMM, or 2.
It's one of 2 things most likely. Bad/incorrect memory or
it has 64MB of integrated video and it doesn't count it,
which in my experience is unlikely.

Is the video ram shared? If so, 64mb of system ram is probably allocated to
the graphcs card

The answer's simple. The laptop has an on-board graphics chip that has
'stolen' 64MB of the system RAM.
