Default Windows XP driver issue?

I have a problem with a WinXP system that has an Iwill KA266Plus
motherboard. After setting up the system it all seemed fine till I
installed Nero 6 and the latest Iwill drivers from their site. Since then
the DVD and CD-RW drives are listed as SCSI devices and the DVD drive won't
work properly, keeps giving I/O errors and takes ages to read a cd the 90%
of the time, fails. Both drives will only rip in musicmatch jukebox at 1.0x
analogue and fail when trying digitally. Any ideas? Can someone point me
in the direction of a better driver? Is that the problem? I know Nero 6
comes with
imagedrive which makes a virtual SCSI dvd drive. This is installed but no
enabled.

Thanks

MJC

I hope you installed the motherboard drivers before Nero.

Only the ones that come with Windows XP. It found them ok, didn't prompt me
for them.
Is that a problem?

VIA motherboards are supposed to have the VIA 4-IN-1's installed. Usually,
the latest ones, except in some cases of Win 9x.

My motherboard is a KA266Plus with an ALi Magik 1 chipset.

I presume I should use the Iwill drivers not the ALi ones? The Ali website
says to use motherboard manufacturer drivers.

Oh, my mistake, an ALI. Yes, I would do what the manufacturer says.

How can I uninstall my current IDE driver safely?

If it's the one Windows installed, I don't think you need to. You can look
in the add/remove programs and see if there's a driver there. After
installing VIA drivers you use the install program to remove them. Or you
could use the driver rollback feature in device manager. Note that there are
disk drive drivers and IDE drivers.

Best to get advice from an ALI expert. You can also try
comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware.storage and also see if there's a newsgroup for
your motherboard maker in the alt.comp.periphs.mainboard groups.
