Does anyone know of any good websites, books, whatever that focus on CPU (x86) architecture from a beginner's perspective, with the long term goal of building a simple processor? Information about the memory/system buses etc would all be appreciated.

You could try a search in Amazon using 'processor architecture'. Quite
expensive books though.
