Default overlay size (XFree, Xv, Linux) > 1536 on what models?

I'm having difficulties playing hdtv (1920 pixels wide) movies on my
9000 pro. I'm told these cards only support a 1536 pixels wide overlay
in XFRee with the Xv driver.
A 9800 is supposed to work OK with these movies, but that is a bit
overkill for 2D work and watching hdtv movies. Can anybody point me at
documentation or tell from experience what cards are the cheapest to
support a 1920 pixel wide overlay?

Thanks,
Jurriaan
