Default Stylus 820 Problem (HELP!!!)

I have an Epson Stylus Photo 820 (about a yr. old)
Went to change black ink cartridge, but the printer will not
recognise new cartridge. Now, I can't print. I tried
disconnecting the USB's from the printer/laptop/hub,etc.
but it still will not recognise the new cartridge. Is there some way to
override the printer to reset this function? Also, this machine was
originally running on a Win98SE computer, and now I'm running
it on a WinXP laptop, I ran fine until this problem came up.

Thanks in advance

Remove the cartridge, clean ( very carefully) the contacts on the cartridge
and the printer and then reinstall it and try again.
If that doesn't work, try another cartridge, you may well have gotten a bad
one.

If it not recognising a cartridge then the contacts at the rear of the
cartridge well are dirty.
Ear buds stroked carefully down - and where possible some Windolene or
ammonia as a degreaser should fix it. Equally providing you are very careful
with static wipe off the green cartridge chip.

Are you using a new Epson cart. or a refilled or third party cart. These
cartridges have an EPROM chip that needs to be reset if you refill the cart.
or else the printer will not recognise the cart. If it is a professionally
refilled cart or third party the chip may be damaged or not reset - quality
control is very poor with these refillers.
