Default just got an EVGA GeForce 5900... any utilities?

That's a normal threshold brakedown temperature for the card. I have an FX
5800 (non-ultra) and the temp is 140 degrees. It's never once went over 50
degrees for any reason even if I overclock it by 10 percent. The slowdown
temperature is there to protect the card and your PC so it's best never to
tamper with that setting. I know how you feel. Even with a clean install I
could never get ATI cards to run the way I wanted them to. I don't think
it's a fault of the ATI card hardware but rather the drivers. I haven't

been
satisfied with ATI drivers. I'll be the first to admit that the drivers

have
come a long way from a year ago.

OK... I found out about coolbits.reg again... I had forgotten about that
one.

I did a normal run of 3DMark and checked the temps on exit, and it got up
to 63 degrees. I tried overclocking the card to the "Ultra" speed (450
MHz), and while it ran fine, the temperature rose to 70. I'm sure that's
OK, but for now I'll just run it at the normal termperature. The
temperatuer on mine is also around 140 degrees, which seems VERY hot to me,
considering thermal death on the Athlon occurs somewhere around 100 C.

The EVGA 5900 doesn't have the massive heatsink on the top like the
reference Ultra. Maybe that has something to do with it?

Yeah, I used to own alot of NVidias, then got into ATI. The Radeon 8500
was an excellent value, but quirky. The new Radeon's (like 9700) on the
whole have good drivers, especially for newer games, but if you like retro
gaming at all, there are a slew of games that just don't run as well as
NVidia's - Rally Masters, Deus Ex, Blade of Darkness, and so on... Also,
they invariably suck for XBox ports.
