Settings lost for 2nd monitor on 8500

All,

I use my Radeon 8500 to drive the LCD Projector via the DVI output
(while still using the VGA monitor as the primary display). The
problem is that any time I turn the monitor off, all the settings
(primarily the refresh rate) get lost. So every time I want to watch a
movie I have to go into the Display Settings menu and manually adjust
the PJ to the correct refresh rate, size and make it a primary display
(a famous ATI thing with displaying the movies only on the primary
display).
Anyone has any remedy in mind? BTW, the profiles don't work
